Mine annexation will affect tax base

E-mail Print PDF

Although the transfer of ownership of Thermo Mine from Luminant Mining to the city of Sulphur Springs is not expected to take place for several months, the pending deal presents a number of issues affecting the residents of the county.

Once the city becomes owner of the almost 5,000-acre property, steps will be taken to annex the former coal mine into the city limits.

Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell said the standard procedure in a property annexation includes notification of affected property owners by certified mail.

In this case the city would be the owner and Maxwell said the city would probably have to send the mayor the certified letter informing him of the proposed annexation.

When that property is brought into the city limits, it will be removed from the tax rolls.
