CANTON, Texas (AP) — At least a half-dozen people remain hospitalized as rescue workers continue to search homes damaged by a rash of deadly tornadoes that struck rural communities east of Dallas.

Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett told WFAA-TV on Monday that widespread debris makes access difficult to some residential areas. Search teams went door to door Sunday after the tornadoes the day before flattened homes, uprooted trees and flipped several pickup trucks at a Dodge dealership there.

"It is heartbreaking and upsetting to say the least," Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett told reporters at a news conference Sunday morning.

Four people were killed and at least 50 others hospitalized when tornadoes swept through the area Saturday. Authorities say two people first reported as missing have been found safe.

ETMC Regional Health Care Systems spokeswoman Rebecca Berkley says 56 people have been treated at three area hospitals. Six stayed hospitalized the first night after the storm; two of those were in critical condition.

National Weather Service meteorologist Patricia Sanchez says one of those tornadoes, with winds of more than 135 mph, was on the ground for 51 miles.

The extent of the damage in the area wasn't immediately clear. But video from local television stations showed uprooted trees and overturned cars along rural, wet roadways, along with at least two flattened homes. The tornado flipped pickup trucks at a Dodge dealership in Canton and tore through the business.

A dispatcher at the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office said officers were chasing numerous injury reports and declined further comment.

Local resident Ernestine Cook told WFAA-TV that she rushed to a storm center just in time.

"It hit so hard, so fast. It just kept moving," she said. "I've never seen anything like it after 22 years of living here.".
